Marvel Studios President and executive producer Kevin Feige brought both actors on stage to present the series, which concludes the epic trilogy that began with 2021’s award-winning WandaVision and continued with 2024’s acclaimed Agatha All Along. The new series marks the beginning of the end for the expansive narrative that has captivated Marvel Cinematic Universe fans for more than five years.

Bettany Reflects on Vision’s Journey Through the MCU

Addressing the D23 crowd, Bettany opened up about his long journey with the character, sharing insights into Vision’s evolution across the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor has been with the franchise since its dawn, first voicing Tony Stark’s AI assistant Jarvis in 2008’s Iron Man before transforming into the physical embodiment of Vision in Age of Ultron.

“It’s been an enormous joy playing the Vision as he’s evolved over the years,” Bettany told the crowd. “He’s been an Avenger, a father, a partner to Wanda, and he’s helped turned the tide in some fairly enormous battles. He made the ultimate sacrifice and rather inconveniently died several times, which I can tell you is an act that can make longterm financial planning difficult. But I am told that in the Marel Universe, no one is ever really dead – unless Kevin says they’re dead. And even then, I wouldn’t really trust him anyway.”

Beyond the live-action movies and television shows, Bettany has also voiced the character in the animated series What If…?, demonstrating the versatility and enduring appeal of Vision across multiple formats. His portrayal has been central to some of Marvel’s most emotionally resonant storytelling, particularly in WandaVision, which explored grief, loss, and the nature of consciousness.

Vision’s Quest for Meaning and Humanity

The new series picks up with Vision rebooted and in hiding after escaping from those who sought to weaponize him. Searching for new meaning in his existence, he consults the AI personas embedded in his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S., and the infamous Ultron. His discreet existence ends abruptly when a bounty placed on his head thrusts him on the run with Thomas Shepard, a mysterious boy who may be Vision’s son, reincarnate.

As Vision evades capture, he must confront his nature, resist Ultron’s influence, and unravel the enigma that is his young companion if he hopes to survive. The series explores profound philosophical questions about consciousness, identity, and what truly defines humanity-themes that have always been at the heart of Vision’s character arc.

“This vision is beginning to ask a more complicated questino: What, or perhaps who, is he?” Bettany continued. “And what is it that makes us actually human? Which brings us to the person you most want beside you during an existential crisis: Ultron. Yes, Ultron is back, and we’re going to figure out humanity together. So obviously, that should go extremely well.”

Spader Returns as Ultron for Philosophical Showdown

Spader’s return as Ultron adds a fascinating layer to the narrative, as the malevolent AI who once sought to wipe out humanity now becomes Vision’s reluctant guide in understanding what it means to be human. The dynamic between creator and creation, villain and hero, promises to deliver compelling dramatic tension throughout the series.

“Frankly, I can’t believe it took you so long to turn to me,” Spader added. “Everyone knows that Ultron has long been fascinated by humanity.”

“I seem to recall you were most interested in wiping them out,” Bettany deadpanned.

Terry Matalas, showrunner of Star Trek: Picard, serves as the creative force behind VisionQuest, bringing his expertise in character-driven science fiction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His involvement signals that the series will likely balance action with deep philosophical exploration of consciousness and identity.

Completing the WandaVision Trilogy

The series follows 2021’s WandaVision, which dealt with Wanda Maximoff’s grief after Vision’s death in Avengers: Infinity War. Elizabeth Olsen starred alongside Bettany in the groundbreaking series that not only became a hit on Disney+ but also earned significant awards recognition, including a best limited series nomination. The story continued with Agatha All Along in 2024, centered on WandaVision antagonist Agatha, played by Kathryn Hahn.

Vision’s character was introduced in Age of Ultron and killed in the 2018 Infinity War film, only to be resurrected without emotions or memories-a state that set up the emotional core of WandaVision. The trilogy has explored themes of grief, loss, identity, and the nature of consciousness through a uniquely Marvel lens, blending superhero spectacle with intimate character drama.

Ensemble Cast Rounds Out the Series

The VisionQuest cast extends beyond Bettany and Spader to include Todd Stashwick as the morally ambiguous mercenary Paladin and Faran Tahir reprising his role as Raz from the MCU kickstarter film Iron Man. Additional cast members include Ruaridh Mollica, T’Nia Miller, Lauren Morais, Diane Morgan, Orla Brady, Polly Frame, Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, Emily Hampshire, and James D’Arcy.

Marvel also shared the official poster for the series during the D23 presentation, giving fans their first visual glimpse of the tone and aesthetic direction for this final chapter in the trilogy. The October 14 premiere date gives Marvel enthusiasts just over two months to prepare for what promises to be an emotionally charged conclusion to one of the most compelling character arcs in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
