Residential Cruise Ship Halts Its Round-the-World Voyage

An “endless” voyage has come to a sudden stop. Villa Vie Residences suspended operations of the Villa Vie Odyssey on Tuesday, October 27, after fuel costs climbed sharply. As a result, residents who call the ship home had to leave it in Cambodia.

The company says it is working on a restructuring and new financing. Meanwhile, passengers face the loss of their floating homes, at least for now. The announcement has rattled a community that expected to live at sea for years.

Residents Given Hours to Disembark

According to one resident, CEO Kathy Villalba posted the news on an internal messaging board at 7 am. Residents had until 2 pm to leave the ship. The vessel is currently in Sihanoukville, according to CruiseMapper.

Villalba explained the decision in a letter to residents. “Unfortunately, we were unable to secure the fuel necessary to continue operations. As a result, the Odyssey will enter a temporary layup this afternoon, with crew remaining onboard to maintain the vessel and its essential systems,” she wrote. Her message also stated: “All residents must disembark by 2 pm today.”

The message was reposted on a blog by resident Randy Cassingham, who lives on the ship with his wife, Kit. Later, according to a Facebook post, guests learned they could leave their belongings onboard. The company said it would secure the cabins.

Notably, the company’s statement did not include an apology. Travel Gossip has contacted Villa Vie Residences for comment.

Why the Ship Stopped Sailing

Villa Vie blamed “extraordinary increases in fuel costs” for the shutdown. The company said fuel expenses in parts of Asia had jumped from a historical average of about $1,800 per cabin per month. It now estimates the cost at $6,000 to $8,000.

The company said the trouble began when conflict broke out in late February. Since then, it tried to cut consumption by slowing the itinerary and spending longer periods in port. However, those measures did not offset the higher bills.

The operator said it could not shift the burden onto residents. “Passing the full increase on to residents is not a realistic solution. Our focus now is on supporting residents, crew, and employees while we work toward restructuring and recapitalization over the next 60 days.”

Consequently, the company has set a 60-day window to restructure and raise capital. Whether the ship sails again after that remains unclear.

Questions About the Company’s Finances

Cruise Industry News reported that the layup followed broader efforts to raise money. Citing sources on board, the outlet said the company approached residents several times for extra funding. One recent request asked for another $360,000 to cover fuel costs.

In addition, the publication reported that the company offered residents an “Emergency Loan Investment Opportunity” in April. That offer sought $3 million, with interest rates ranging from 12 to 24 percent. Together, these reports suggest the financial strain built up well before this week.

Critics argue the collapse points to a deeper problem. Residential-style cruise ships let passengers rent or buy cabins and live at sea for years. Skeptics have long questioned whether that model can survive swings in fuel prices.

An Unusual Concept Interrupted

The Odyssey was built around a bold idea. The company’s website describes a 24,344-gross-ton ship with eight decks. It can house up to 650 residents and promises visits to more than 425 destinations across 147 countries and more than 100 islands.

The vessel was previously Fred. Olsen’s Braemar. It began its continuous round-the-world cruise from Belfast on 3 October 2024. That departure came after more than four months of delays.

Residents bought in at different levels. Some paid for permanent residency, at prices advertised from around $120,000. Others bought five-year cruises, and some sublet their cabins to passengers on shorter trips.

What Comes Next for Villa Vie

The company announced earlier this year that it plans to launch a second ship, Legacy, in 2029. It also offered those who invested immediately the option to sail on the Odyssey in the meantime. Now, those investors face fresh uncertainty about both vessels.

For now, the Odyssey sits in a temporary layup while crew maintain the ship and its essential systems. Residents must find somewhere else to stay, and many have their life savings tied up in their cabins. Ultimately, the next 60 days will show whether the endless cruise can resume or whether its voyage has ended for good.
