Video footage shared by photographer Viral Bhayani captured the moving moment when Mukerji received the degree. The actress softly wiped away tears while smiling, revealing the deep emotional impact of the recognition. The honor underscores cinema’s role in strengthening people-to-people ties between India and Australia, according to the university.

“Receiving this honorary doctorate from La Trobe University is one of the most humbling moments of my life,” Mukerji said. “For someone who has always believed that films can change hearts before they change minds, this recognition means more than I can possibly express.”

Khan’s doctorate marked his charitable work and standing in Indian film, and came with a Ph.D. scholarship established in his name at the university. Mukerji’s own citation draws on similar ground, acknowledging both her screen career and the causes she has backed alongside it. The recognition highlights her role as a cultural ambassador who has used cinema to represent Indian women and tell important stories.

A Career Built on Meaningful Storytelling

Mukerji reflected on her approach to selecting film projects, emphasizing that her choices have always come down to what moved her personally first. She focuses on stories that need telling, stories that can inspire and empower audiences. The actress has consistently worked to represent powerful girls and women through cinema that has its heart in the right place. Her filmography demonstrates this commitment through socially conscious roles and narratives.

“I have always chosen films that have made an impact in my heart first. A story that needs to be told. A story that would inspire and empower,” Mukerji explained. “I have always silently worked to represent the powerful girls and women of India through cinema that has its heart in the right place.”

The actress expressed her belief that every artist carries a responsibility beyond performance. Mukerji noted that performers quietly become ambassadors of their culture, using their platform to create understanding and dialogue. Her films have helped audiences understand India and its women better, fostering empathy and encouraging important conversations about social issues.

“If my films have helped even one person understand India and its women a little better… If they have encouraged dialogue… If they have created empathy… Then I feel I have fulfilled a responsibility far greater than simply being an actor,” Mukerji stated.

Double Recognition at Melbourne Film Festival

Mukerji received a second honor alongside her doctorate when the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) awarded her a special citation for acting excellence. The festival cited her three decades of memorable roles and the international reach of her work. This year’s IFFM, running August 13-23, gathers Indian filmmakers and films from around the country as part of its wider program celebrating Indian cinema.

The actress expressed gratitude for the warm reception her work has received in Australia. She described how she never imagined as a young girl entering the film industry that her characters would carry her across oceans. Entertaining people across the world with her cinema represents the greatest gift this profession has given her, according to the actress.

“When I entered the Indian film industry as a young girl, I never imagined that one day my films and the characters that I have been fortunate enough to play, would take me across oceans and that people in a beautiful country like Australia would embrace me with so much warmth,” Mukerji said.

Australia has become a place where cultures meet through storytelling, where films remind audiences of shared humanity. The actress noted that Australia has always welcomed her and Indian cinema with open arms. The recognition demonstrates the power of film to bridge cultural divides and create meaningful connections between nations.

An Acclaimed Filmography

Mukerji’s filmography includes numerous critically acclaimed and commercially successful films that have defined her career. Her memorable works include Black, Hum Tum, Yuva, Bunty Aur Babli, and No One Killed Jessica. She has also starred in the Mardaani franchise and films like Hichki and Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway, showcasing her range as an actress.

Most recently, Mukerji appeared in Mardaani 3, where she reprised her role as police officer Shivani Shivaji Roy. The film followed her character as she investigated the mysterious disappearance of 93 young girls. Last year, the actress won the National Award for Best Actress for her performance in Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway, further cementing her status as one of Indian cinema’s most accomplished performers.

The Honorary Doctor of Letters degree from La Trobe University represents a significant milestone in Mukerji’s distinguished career. The recognition validates her commitment to meaningful cinema and her impact as a cultural ambassador. Her emotional response to receiving the honor demonstrated the profound personal significance of the achievement for an actress who has dedicated her career to telling stories that matter and representing her country with dignity and purpose on the global stage.
