The LSU Tigers prepare to host the Mississippi State Bulldogs on October 17 in what promises to be another memorable homecoming weekend. The Tigers enter this critical matchup looking to bounce back from their recent loss in Kentucky and maintain their remarkable homecoming tradition while avoiding a troubling 1-3 start in SEC conference play.

LSU carries an impressive undefeated homecoming streak that extends back to 2017, and the program has delivered some of the most thrilling finishes in recent memory during these special weekend celebrations. The stakes couldn’t be higher as the Tigers seek to protect both their homecoming legacy and their postseason aspirations in front of their home crowd.

Dramatic 2021 Victory Over Florida Stands Out

The unranked Tigers welcomed the No. 20-ranked Florida Gators to Death Valley in 2021, and both teams delivered an offensive explosion that featured 13 touchdowns in a shootout that kept fans on the edge of their seats. Quarterback Max Johnson orchestrated a game-winning drive with less than five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, marching the Tigers all the way down to the goalline.

Johnson found Jaray Jenkins open in the endzone for the go-ahead touchdown, putting LSU up 49-42 and sending the home crowd into a frenzy. The Gators got the ball back with three minutes left in regulation, but when they reached their own 37-yard line, quarterback Anthony Richardson lobbed a pass intended for Rick Wells that was intercepted by Damone Clark, sealing the victory for the Tigers.

Overtime Thriller Against Ole Miss in 2024

In October 2024, the No. 13-ranked Tigers hosted the No. 9-ranked Ole Miss Rebels in what became a dramatic come-from-behind victory that had fans storming the field in celebration. The Rebels controlled the game for nearly the entire contest and held a 23-16 lead heading into the fourth quarter, but LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier refused to let his team go down quietly.

Nussmeier led his team 52 yards down to the red zone, where he found Aaron Anderson over the middle for the game-tying touchdown that sent the game into overtime. In the extra period, Ole Miss received the ball first, but the LSU defense rose to the occasion and held them to just a field goal, giving the Tigers’ offense another chance down 26-23.

On the very first play of overtime, Nussmeier called game finding a wide open Kyren Lacy in the endzone to seal it for the Tigers.

LSU pulled off the upset win in dramatic fashion, and the jubilant fans immediately stormed the field to celebrate with the players, creating one of the most memorable homecoming moments in recent program history.

Historic Milestones Beyond Football

35 years ago, LSU homecoming made history when Renee Boutte Meyer was selected as queen during the Mississippi State game, becoming the first-ever African-American LSU Homecoming queen. She set the foundation for future generations of LSU royalty and paved the way for greater inclusivity in campus traditions.

Just last homecoming, T’Senre Gray and Kalayna Walker made more history as the first-ever Black king and queen together for LSU, demonstrating how the university continues to evolve and celebrate diversity while honoring the groundbreaking achievements of those who came before them.

High Stakes for Saturday’s Matchup

The Tigers face a critical juncture in their season as they prepare to take on Mississippi State. After dropping last week’s game in Kentucky, LSU desperately needs a victory to avoid falling to 1-3 in SEC play, which would significantly damage their hopes for a conference championship run and potential College Football Playoff berth.

The homecoming setting provides both motivation and pressure for the Tigers, who understand the weight of maintaining their unbeaten streak on this special weekend. The last time LSU lost a homecoming game was in 2017, nearly a decade ago, and no current player wants to be part of the team that breaks that impressive run.

Mississippi State enters Death Valley looking to spoil the celebration and pick up a crucial SEC road victory of their own. The Bulldogs will face a hostile environment and a desperate LSU team determined to protect their home turf and keep their season alive.

What to Watch For

Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier will look to recapture the magic he displayed during last year’s homecoming overtime thriller against Ole Miss. The Tigers will need him to execute efficiently and avoid the mistakes that plagued them in their recent loss to Kentucky, particularly in crucial third-down situations and red zone opportunities.

The LSU defense must contain Mississippi State’s offensive weapons and force turnovers to give their offense short fields and scoring opportunities. Homecoming games often feature emotional performances and momentum swings, and the Tigers will need to harness the energy from their passionate home crowd to fuel their effort on both sides of the ball.

Kickoff is scheduled for October 17, and the atmosphere in Death Valley promises to be electric as thousands of alumni return to campus for the annual celebration. The combination of homecoming festivities, high-stakes SEC football, and LSU’s proud tradition creates the perfect stage for another memorable chapter in Tiger football history.
