Rivera played the grandmother of Ned Leeds, portrayed by Jacob Batalon, in the 2021 Marvel blockbuster. TMZ reported news of Rivera’s death on Monday, August 3, with family members confirming the actress suffered a stroke that required life support. Doctors provided a grim prognosis, indicating Rivera would not likely recover from the coma, leading the family to make the difficult decision to remove her from life support.

According to her obituary, Rivera was born on June 2, 1943, in Iloilo, Philippines. Family members told TMZ that Rivera was extremely proud of her role in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and landing the part in the Sony Pictures film was one of her most cherished accomplishments. Her family encouraged her to audition for the role, which allowed her to speak in Tagalog on screen.

A Memorable Scene With Marvel Icons

Rivera’s memorable appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home featured her sharing the screen with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. In the scene, Batalon and Zendaya open a portal hoping to reach Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, but instead uncover a multiverse of Peters, bringing Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire into the frame.

The scene unfolds as Ned and MJ find themselves in a tense standoff with Garfield’s Peter Parker, who just emerged from the multiverse to help save their universe’s Spider-Man. Rivera then enters the room, breaking the suspense with her natural presence and charm.

Zendaya’s MJ asks Garfield’s Peter to prove he’s Spider-Man, prompting him to demonstrate by crawling on the ceiling. Rivera’s character, Ned’s Lola, then asks Garfield’s Peter to remove a cobweb from the ceiling through her grandson’s translation. Garfield’s character obliges, creating a moment that blended humor with the film’s high-stakes multiverse narrative.
