“Before I play some songs tonight, I hope it’s okay if I say a few words about this last week,” Sheeran said at the top of Saturday’s show. “I’m used to my music being criticized, and I’m always happy to take that because I’m lucky. A lot of you like my stuff, and to be honest, I’m surprised. I’m not surprised that I’ve even done it. You know, it’s normal. But this week, the criticism was about something much more important, and I’ve had to take and make difficult decisions, and I am making mistakes, and I’m so, so sorry.”

The Grammy winner continued by explaining his position on activism and the conflict at the center of the controversy. He emphasized that his concerts have always served as safe spaces for everyone and stressed his commitment to honoring his fans. Sheeran stated he never wanted to become an activist musician, but the situation had thrust him into the middle of what he called “the most complex political issue on the planet.”

Navigating Difficult Terrain

Sheeran addressed the broader implications of the controversy by expressing concerns about content pre-approval at venues. “This happens in so many places that I perform around the world, but it should never happen in the free world,” he told the crowd. The singer then pivoted to directly address the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, acknowledging he could no longer remain silent on humanitarian issues despite his preference to keep politics separate from his music.

“What happened in Israel and at the Nova Music Festival on October 7th was horrific and compounded centuries of Jewish pain. What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and unjustifiable, and disproportionate. Our hearts can be broken by the scale of devastation and loss of civilians’ lives, of children’s lives, and the systemic injustice we’re seeing unfold in the West Bank cannot be overlooked,” Sheeran said.

The controversy began on September 4, 2026, when Macklemore performed his first show on the Loop Tour at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The rapper performed his protest anthem “Hind’s Hall” and told the crowd that a big part of why he wanted to join the tour was to stand in stadiums and say “Free Palestine.” During his second night at the venue, Macklemore addressed Jewish audience members directly, clarifying that criticism of Israel and opposition to what he called genocide was not criticism of Jewish people.

Fallout and Difficult Decisions

The remarks triggered immediate backlash that resulted in Macklemore’s removal from the tour. According to reports, the Palestinian death count from the ongoing conflict had surpassed 73,000 at the time of the performance, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. The United Nations has declared Israel’s actions as genocidal, though Israel and its allies, including the United States, deny this characterization.

The two musicians had maintained a friendship spanning more than a decade. Macklemore, Sheeran, and Ryan Lewis released a song together in 2015 called “Growing Up,” and the year prior, the pair performed together at the iHeartRadio Music Festival. The abrupt end to Macklemore’s opening stint reverberated through the music community, with notable voices including Gillette Stadium owner Robert Kraft and other Loop Tour opening acts like Finneas and Lukas Graham weighing in on the controversy.

Personal Impact and Fear on Stage

Later in the set, Sheeran introduced the musicians who replaced Beoga, the traditional Irish folk group that pulled out of his remaining U.S. tour dates. The singer revealed his struggles finding replacement performers willing to stand beside him amid the controversy. “How am I gonna get musicians to stand on stage with me in a week when no one wants to stand on stage with me?” he asked rhetorically, describing his search for collaborators.

Sheeran expressed deep gratitude for the musicians who agreed to perform despite the public backlash. He acknowledged they said yes “with the knowledge that the world may hate them too for standing on stage with me.” The emotional toll of the week became even more apparent when he revealed he had scrapped the B stage-a smaller secondary platform closer to the crowd where he typically performs several songs-because he “was scared of what might happen” if he stood in the middle of the audience.

Uncertain Reception and Moving Forward

“I’m gonna be totally honest with you, I didn’t know what this audience would be like tonight,” Sheeran admitted on stage. “I didn’t know if I would have things thrown at me.” The vulnerability in his remarks highlighted the personal cost of being caught between competing demands for political expression and maintaining a neutral artistic space. Despite his traditional stance of avoiding political commentary, Sheeran stated he is already speaking to people across the spectrum to determine how to make a contribution that helps victims of the conflict.

The singer emphasized his desire to keep his music and shows focused on unity rather than division and on humanity rather than politics. However, he acknowledged that the humanitarian dimension of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict made it impossible to remain completely silent. Sheeran closed his remarks by noting he is “listening and learning because I do not know enough” about the complex situation, signaling both humility and a willingness to engage more deeply with the issues at hand.
