Clooney stands as one of only three people to have been nominated in six different Oscar categories throughout his career, spanning best picture, director, lead actor, supporting actor, original screenplay, and adapted screenplay. This remarkable achievement underscores his versatility and influence across the cinematic landscape. The festival will celebrate him on the Lido on the evening of Sept. 2 during the opening ceremony, honoring his triple guise as actor, director, and producer.

Recognition Beyond Filmmaking

The Venice Biennale emphasized that Clooney’s honor extends beyond his creative output. According to the official Biennale statement, the works he directed and his public persona reflect his other vocation, “a commitment to social and humanitarian causes, making him a figure of absolute prominence in the universe of show business today.” This recognition acknowledges Clooney’s efforts to leverage his platform for global advocacy and social justice initiatives.

Dern brings her own distinguished Venice pedigree to the ceremony. In 2025, she was part of the cast of Noah Baumbach’s “Jay Kelly,” alongside Clooney, which competed at the festival. Her relationship with Venice spans decades, having attended multiple times with various acclaimed projects. She previously graced the Lido with “Haunted Summer” in 1988 by Ivan Passer and “October Sky” in 1998 by Joe Johnston.

Dern’s Venice Legacy

The actress’s festival history includes Robert Altman’s “Dr. T & the Women” in 2000 and David Lynch’s “Inland Empire” in 2006. Her appearance with Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” in 2019 proved particularly significant, as she went on to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in that film. More recently, Dern returned to Venice with “The Son” in 2022, directed by Florian Zeller.

Notably, Dern has previous experience honoring Golden Lion recipients at Venice. In 2006, she made the speech when the festival awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement to David Lynch, with whom she has collaborated extensively throughout her career. This historical connection adds depth to her selection as the speaker for Clooney’s ceremony, linking two generations of cinematic excellence at the prestigious festival.

Clooney’s Long History with Venice

Clooney is a Lido aficionado who has strutted down the Venice Palazzo del Cinema red carpet several times over the decades. His Venice journey began with “Out of Sight” in 1998, establishing his presence at one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals. He returned in 2005 with “Good Night, and Good Luck,” a film that showcased his directorial talents and earned critical acclaim.

His recent Venice appearances include “Wolfs” in 2024 and “Jay Kelly” last year, demonstrating his continued relevance and commitment to the festival circuit. These repeated appearances have solidified his relationship with Venice and the Italian film community, making the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement a fitting recognition of this enduring connection.

The 83rd Edition Details

The 83rd edition of the Venice Film Festival will run from September 2 through 12, with Clooney’s honor serving as a centerpiece of the opening ceremony. The timing positions his recognition as a marquee moment that will set the tone for the festival’s celebration of cinematic achievement. The event typically attracts global media attention, industry professionals, and film enthusiasts from around the world.

The combination of Dern and Clooney at the opening ceremony creates a powerful moment that unites two respected figures whose careers have intersected at various points, most recently in “Jay Kelly.” Their professional relationship and mutual respect add significance to the occasion, making Dern’s Laudatio speech particularly meaningful. The ceremony will offer an opportunity to reflect on Clooney’s multifaceted contributions to cinema and society.

A Celebration of Artistic Excellence

The Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement represents one of cinema’s highest honors, placing Clooney among an elite group of filmmakers and performers recognized by the festival. His six Oscar category nominations demonstrate a breadth of talent rarely seen in the industry, spanning creative, technical, and performance-based recognition. This versatility has defined his career and influenced a generation of filmmakers who seek to work across multiple disciplines.

Clooney’s impact extends beyond traditional entertainment metrics. His humanitarian work, including efforts in conflict zones and advocacy for human rights, has established him as a figure whose influence transcends Hollywood. The Venice Biennale’s acknowledgment of this broader contribution reflects the festival’s understanding that artistic excellence and social responsibility are increasingly interconnected in contemporary cinema.

As the festival prepares to open, the pairing of Dern and Clooney promises a memorable ceremony that honors both individual achievement and the collaborative spirit of filmmaking. Their shared history with Venice, spanning decades and multiple projects, creates a narrative thread that connects past, present, and future generations of cinema. The September 2 ceremony will mark not just a career milestone but a celebration of cinema’s power to inspire change both on and off screen.
