Thompson Delivers Game-Saving Rejection

Amen Thompson provided the defining moment of Houston’s early season with a dramatic defensive stand that sealed a 114-110 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night. The 6-foot-7 guard blocked Victor Wembanyama’s potential game-tying layup attempt with less than a second remaining at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas. The win pushed the Rockets to a perfect 2-0 start while dropping the Spurs to 0-2. Thompson couldn’t quite articulate what transpired in that final sequence, but his athletic rejection prevented the towering French rookie from sending the contest into overtime.

The matchup featured intense back-and-forth action throughout all four quarters, with Houston maintaining control for 89% of the game according to ESPN Analytics. The Rockets built their largest advantage to 11 points, but San Antonio clawed back repeatedly to keep the outcome in doubt until the final buzzer. A crowd of 16,723 witnessed the thriller at the venue in Austin, where the officiating crew of Kevin Cutler, Brandon Adair, and Ashley Moyer-Gleich called the contest.

Sengun Commands Rockets’ Offensive Attack

Alperen Sengun paced the Rockets with a game-high 29 points on efficient 10-of-20 shooting from the field while adding 7-of-8 accuracy from the free-throw line. The center also contributed seven assists over 36 minutes of action, though he committed three turnovers in his extended playing time. Thompson complemented Sengun’s offensive production with a dominant showing on the glass, hauling in 10 rebounds including seven defensive boards and three offensive caroms. His all-around effort proved critical in the narrow victory.

Houston executed efficiently as a unit, converting 49% of their field goal attempts by connecting on 38-of-78 shots. The team demonstrated solid perimeter shooting with a 40% success rate from three-point range on 10-of-25 attempts. Most impressive was the Rockets’ discipline at the charity stripe, where they drained 90% of their free throws by making 28-of-31. The team committed 15 turnovers while grabbing 44 rebounds, outmuscling San Antonio on the boards.

Wembanyama Leads Spurs’ Valiant Effort

Victor Wembanyama showcased his versatility in the losing effort, posting 25 points while battling through defensive attention. The rookie sensation connected on 9-of-21 field goal attempts and added 5-of-8 from the free-throw line. Wembanyama dominated the rebounding department with a double-digit performance, collecting 13 boards including nine defensive and four offensive rebounds. Despite his statistical production, his final shot attempt met rejection from Thompson’s outstretched hand as time expired.

De’Aaron Fox orchestrated the Spurs’ offense with nine assists during his 34 minutes on the court, though he struggled with ball security by committing five turnovers. Fox provided a highlight moment when he converted an and-one opportunity late in the contest. San Antonio shot 46% from the field on 40-of-87 attempts but cooled off from beyond the arc, making only 32% of their three-point tries with 12-of-37 conversions.

Free-Throw Disparity Proves Decisive

The difference at the foul line ultimately separated the two squads in the tightly contested affair. While Houston converted an excellent 90% of their charity stripe opportunities, San Antonio managed only 72% accuracy by making 18-of-25 free throws. Both teams committed an identical 15 turnovers, but the Rockets held a slight edge on the boards with 44 rebounds compared to the Spurs’ 40. The rebounding advantage gave Houston additional possessions in crucial moments throughout the game.

Dylan Harper energized the crowd with a spectacular poster dunk during the contest, while Sengun fought through defensive pressure to earn an and-one conversion. The competitive nature of the matchup showed in the quarter-by-quarter scoring, with Houston posting 32-29-24-29 and San Antonio countering with 27-32-22-29. Neither team established overwhelming dominance in any single period.

Southwest Division Implications

The victory strengthened Houston’s position atop the Southwest Division standings alongside the Memphis Grizzlies, both sporting identical 2-0 records and 1.000 winning percentages. The Dallas Mavericks sit one game back at 1-1, while the New Orleans Pelicans and Spurs occupy the division cellar at 0-2. Houston now leads the season series 1-0 with three additional matchups scheduled between the rivals.

The teams will meet again on Wednesday, January 27 at 1:00 AM for Game 2 in San Antonio, followed by a home-and-home sequence at Houston on Saturday, March 6 and Wednesday, March 17. San Antonio will seek to avenge this heartbreaking defeat and secure their first victory of the campaign. Wembanyama’s impressive rookie performance suggests future contests between these divisional foes will remain fiercely competitive, though he’ll want to erase the memory of Thompson’s game-saving block from his highlight reel.
