The song, titled “My Place In History,” sits sealed inside a chestnut box alongside physical copies in cassette and CD formats and their corresponding players. Parton and her team buried the time capsule to mark the opening of the resort, and it carries strict instructions to remain unopened until January 19, 2046 – what would have been Parton’s 100th birthday.

A placard inside the box explains the project’s significance, calling the chestnut Dream Box “a repository of Dolly’s wishes and memories for the future.” The message notes that the box itself honors Bill Owens, Parton’s original mentor and uncle, who worked tirelessly to preserve the American Chestnut tree. The placard confirms that Parton placed inside “a song which she has written to be released as her last,” with its melody and content known only to the artist until the designated opening date.

Parton Revealed the Project to Kelly Clarkson

The country icon opened up about her buried treasure during a 2022 appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show.” Parton confirmed the vault track exists and acknowledged she might not be alive for the reveal. She even admitted the project caused her persistent frustration over the years, despite understanding its long-term purpose.

“They weren’t expecting me to be there at all,” Parton said. “I’m just saying, I might be there. Who knows? But the point is, there is a song – I figure it’ll probably disintegrate, probably nobody ever hears it. That’s what bothers me, to think that it’s gonna be a song that nobody’s ever gonna hear if it rots in there before they open it.”

Despite concerns about deterioration, Parton insisted the track deserved its eventual unveiling. She told Clarkson she considered it a genuinely exceptional composition, though she expressed bemused regret about agreeing to the scheme in the first place.

“It’s a really good song,” she added. “But yes, I have a song that’s buried that nobody’s gonna hear – I don’t know whose damn idea that was.”

The Song’s Content Remains a Complete Mystery

More than eleven years have passed since the burial, yet no details about the song’s lyrics, theme, or musical style have emerged. Parton never disclosed what inspired “My Place In History” or whether it addresses personal reflections, career milestones, or broader philosophical themes. The title itself suggests introspection about her legacy, though fans can only speculate until the capsule’s scheduled opening.

The singer’s remarks to Clarkson revealed an ongoing internal struggle between honoring the time capsule concept and her natural desire to share music immediately. Parton admitted the temptation to retrieve the recording proved almost overwhelming at times. The very existence of such a powerful unreleased track gnawed at her creative spirit, yet she maintained the commitment to the 2046 reveal date.

Parton’s representatives confirmed her death Tuesday, stating she passed following a brief battle with cancer at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville. The statement to People magazine honored her lifetime of contributions and generosity, noting she “spent her life and career bringing joy, laughter, hope and integrity into everything she touched.” Her unmatched charitable work reached countless individuals she would never meet, yet she consistently offered support to those in need.

Multiple Posthumous Projects Continue Her Legacy

The buried song represents just one of several endeavors that will extend Parton’s influence beyond her lifetime. “Dolly: A True Original Musical,” a Broadway production based on her extraordinary life, debuts on January 19, 2027 – the date that would have marked her 81st birthday. The musical chronicles her journey from humble beginnings in rural Tennessee to international superstardom and philanthropic achievement.

Parton’s Dollywood theme park, which opened in 1986, will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2045, just months before the scheduled capsule opening. The park has become a major tourist destination and economic driver for East Tennessee, employing thousands and drawing millions of visitors annually while maintaining Parton’s commitment to Appalachian culture and family values.

Preservation Concerns and Technical Challenges

Parton’s worries about deterioration raise legitimate questions about long-term media preservation. Cassette tapes and compact discs face known durability issues over extended periods, particularly in underground storage conditions. Temperature fluctuations, humidity, and physical degradation could potentially compromise the recording quality or render the media unplayable by the time curators attempt playback in 2046.

The inclusion of playback equipment inside the capsule demonstrates foresight about technological obsolescence. By 2046, cassette players and CD players may be difficult to locate or maintain, making the buried devices essential for accessing the song. However, these mechanical components also face deterioration risks, including battery corrosion, motor failure, and electronic component breakdown that could prevent successful operation.

Professional archivists typically recommend climate-controlled environments and periodic migration to new formats for long-term audio preservation. The chestnut box burial represents a more romantic than practical approach to time capsule creation, though it aligns perfectly with Parton’s theatrical sensibility and gift for creating memorable moments. Whether the recording survives intact remains uncertain, adding an element of suspense to the eventual 2046 unveiling.

A Final Gift From a Generous Artist

The secret song epitomizes Parton’s lifelong commitment to surprising and delighting audiences. Throughout her six-decade career, she composed thousands of songs, sold millions of records, won numerous awards, and expanded into acting, business, and philanthropy. Her Imagination Library program has distributed over 200 million books to children worldwide, while her million-dollar donation helped fund COVID-19 vaccine research.

Parton’s representatives noted that her generosity reached countless people she would never meet personally, yet she remained accessible and devoted to helping others. The buried song extends this pattern, offering a posthumous connection to future generations who will experience her artistry in 2046. Those listeners, born long after her passing, will receive a personal message from an artist who imagined their experience decades earlier.

Until the capsule opens, “My Place In History” remains exactly what Parton intended – a mystery, a promise, and a testament to her enduring faith in music’s power to bridge time. The world may have lost Dolly Parton on Tuesday, but her voice will speak again in 2046, reminding everyone why she earned her place in history.

Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas” just secured its 17th consecutive week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, etching the country crossover hit into the record books with sole possession of the fourth-longest command in the chart’s history. The song, which first claimed the top spot in February, left behind a three-way tie that included Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night,” Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito,” and Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day,” all of which spent 16 weeks at No. 1. The milestone marks another victory for Langley, who has dominated charts throughout 2026 with what many consider the biggest hit single of the year.

Only three songs in Billboard history have spent more time at the summit. Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” and Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” each logged 19 weeks at the top, while Mariah Carey’s holiday perennial “All I Want for Christmas Is You” holds the all-time record with 22 weeks at No. 1, accumulated between 2019 and 2026. What once seemed like an unbreakable record now appears within Langley’s reach, as the song shows few signs of slowing its historic march.

Momentum Builds Across Radio Formats

The continued dominance of “Choosin’ Texas” reflects strong performance across all metrics that comprise the Billboard Hot 100, which blends all-genre U.S. streaming, radio airplay, and sales data. During the tracking week of July 31 through Aug. 6, the song on SAWGOD/Columbia Records tallied 24.9 million official streams (down 2% week over week), 54.5 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 4%), and 9,000 copies sold (up 9%). The increase in radio audience came partly from the song’s first appearance in the top 10 on Billboard’s Pop Airplay chart this week, as stations that traditionally avoid country music find themselves giving in to audience demand.

Overall radio play for the track increased by 4% for the week because of the added pop airplay, according to Billboard. This crossover success demonstrates the song’s ability to transcend genre boundaries and appeal to mainstream audiences beyond country music’s traditional fan base. Triple Tigers promoted the track to country radio, where it has maintained consistent strength throughout its run.

Country Music’s Chart Domination

Langley held the top spot despite a strong showing from Ariana Grande, whose new album “Petal” launched as her seventh No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Grande placed two songs in the top 10 this week, with leadoff single “Hate That I Made You Love Me” rebounding from No. 8 to No. 2 after it debuted atop the chart in May. The album’s title track, “Petal,” debuted at No. 4, marking a significant pop presence that temporarily disrupted country music’s chart dominance.

Last week, country songs made history by occupying all five top spots on the Billboard Hot 100. While Grande’s resurgence means the genre no longer claims a complete sweep, country representation remains strong. Morgan Wallen’s “Been by Now” dropped just one position to No. 3 in its second week out, while Taylor Swift’s “I Knew It, I Knew You” fell two spots to No. 5. Stella Lefty’s freshman smash “Boston” dropped a single spot to No. 6.

Collaborative Success With Morgan Wallen

Langley and Wallen function more as collaborators than competitors despite the chart battle. Their duet, “I Can’t Love You Anymore,” just reached No. 1 on Country Airplay, giving Wallen his 22nd hit country single. Langley is opening for Wallen on select dates of his Still the Problem tour this year, further cementing their professional partnership. The success of their collaboration adds another dimension to Langley’s breakout year, demonstrating her ability to hold her own alongside one of country music’s biggest stars.

The relationship between the two artists highlights the collaborative spirit within the country music community, even as Langley’s solo work surpasses Wallen’s previous records. “Last Night” spent 16 weeks at No. 1 in 2023, a mark that seemed untouchable at the time. Now, Langley has extended beyond that milestone with no clear end in sight for “Choosin’ Texas.”

Breaking Down the All-Time Rankings

The updated rankings of the longest-leading hits in Billboard Hot 100 history, which dates to August 1958, now show Langley firmly positioned in fourth place. The complete list reveals the exclusive company she keeps: Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” with 22 weeks remains at the top, followed by “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” and “Old Town Road” tied at 19 weeks each. Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas” sits alone at 17 weeks, followed by the three-way tie at 16 weeks that she just broke free from.

With another six weeks at No. 1 needed to match Carey’s all-time record, what once would have seemed like a laughable goal now appears within the realm of possibility. The holiday season will ultimately tell whether “Choosin’ Texas” can maintain its momentum, though Carey’s Christmas classic traditionally sees renewed strength during the final months of the year.

Fan Base and Tour Momentum

Langley’s popularity has spawned a dedicated fan following, with male supporters even adopting their own fandom identity as “Ella’s Fellas.” This grassroots enthusiasm translates into consistent streaming numbers and strong concert attendance. Langley’s Dandelion tour continues this week with a stop at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas on Aug. 13, a fitting location given the song’s title and themes.

The track’s dominance throughout the summer months has established “Choosin’ Texas” as arguably the song of the summer for 2026. Time will determine whether Langley can extend her reign through the fall and challenge the records held by Carey, Shaboozey, and Lil Nas X, but the trajectory suggests continued strength in the weeks ahead.

Jelly Roll has achieved remarkable commercial success and has been open about his troubled past. The 41-year-old artist boasts more than 20 million monthly Spotify listeners and has earned three Grammy Awards while receiving nominations for four more, including a nod for Best New Artist in 2024. His hits include “Save Me” and “Son of a Sinner,” which have dominated country radio for years. Beyond his musical achievements, Jelly Roll has spoken publicly about his history of incarceration, which includes around 40 jail stints for drug and robbery charges, starting at the age of 14. His personal journey from repeated incarceration to Grammy-winning artist forms a central part of his story, which he explored in his 2023 Hulu documentary.

The Beginning of Their Love Story

The couple’s relationship began in 2015 when they met at one of Jelly Roll’s concerts. Bunnie Xo, whose real name is Alisa DeFord, was working as a sex worker at the time they first connected. What started as a friendship quickly evolved into romance, and the pair married the following year in 2016. Speaking to Bert Kreischer in 2022, Jelly Roll revealed he was “dead broke” when they met. Bunnie provided crucial financial support for his 2017 album Addiction Kills and stood by him as he fought for custody of his daughter, Bailee, while the child’s mother allegedly battled addiction.

The singer frequently credited his wife with transforming his life trajectory during their years together. When accepting the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Country Album in February, Jelly Roll delivered an emotional tribute that now carries additional weight given recent developments.

“I would have never changed my life without you,” he said during his Grammy acceptance speech. “I would have ended up dead or in jail. I would have killed myself if it wasn’t for you and Jesus. I thank you for that.”

Bunnie Xo’s Independent Success and Revelations

While supporting her husband’s musical career, Bunnie Xo built her own media presence through her podcast, Dumb Blonde, where she conducts longform interviews with celebrity guests. She quit sex work in 2023 after establishing herself as a podcaster, and her show has gained significant traction, including a recent live show in Nashville that featured Wynonna Judd as a guest. The 46-year-old media personality once went viral for sharing on her podcast that she uses diapers instead of tampons, demonstrating her unfiltered approach to content creation.

However, their relationship faced serious challenges over the years. In her 2026 memoir Stripped Down: Unfiltered and Unapologetic, Bunnie revealed that Jelly Roll had an affair that lasted for almost a year in 2018. Reflecting on that dark period, Jelly Roll described it as “one of the worst moments of my adulthood” during an appearance on the Human School Podcast.

“I did a lot of work to repair that relationship, you know what I mean?” he explained. “The repair has been special. And we’re stronger than we could have ever been. I wish our story would have went in a way that it never had an affair, but-and I’m in no way glad it happened-but man, I’m proud of who we are today.”

Recent Signs and Public Attempts at Reconciliation

Despite the infidelity, the couple worked to rebuild their marriage and renewed their vows in 2023 at the same chapel where they had originally wed seven years earlier. More recently, Bunnie revealed that they were exploring IVF to expand their family, suggesting plans for a shared future together. However, according to a source who spoke with People magazine, the two had “a lot going on privately.” The insider noted that the pair has “always had a complicated dynamic” shaped by the circumstances under which they first came together.

“When they first got together, they were both in a very different place in their lives,” the source explained. “There was a lot of chaos, ups and downs, and they built a life together through all of that.”

The source added that Jelly Roll has “changed a lot” in recent years and is “very focused on his future, his health and being around for a long time.” The rapper has been open about his dramatic health transformation, losing significant weight during his wellness journey.

Addressing Speculation and Setting Boundaries

Following news of the divorce becoming public on June 15, both Jelly Roll and his 18-year-old daughter Bailee Ann DeFord addressed speculation surrounding a TikTok video he posted on June 5. The video featured photos of Jelly Roll and his daughter set to “Mama,” his recent collaboration with Latto. The lyrics sang about feeling on top of the world after having a baby girl. Fans theorized the video was meant as a response to the split, with some suggesting it showed disrespect toward Bunnie’s role in his success.

However, Jelly Roll clarified his intention on June 16, explaining that the video was not meant to comment on their divorce.

“This wasn’t posted today,” he wrote. “It’s just going viral today, it is not a response to anything. All this post meant was I love my daughter and I’m honored to be on Latto’s song. Love y’all.”

Bailee Ann, who is Jelly Roll’s daughter from a previous relationship, also spoke up about the split on her TikTok Stories on June 16, asking for privacy during what she characterized as a clearly private family matter. The teen expressed disgust at the level of public investment in their personal situation, telling followers to worry about their own households instead. She added that while she’s not speaking on the matter currently, she hinted she might share her thoughts on the divorce in the future. Jelly Roll is also father to 9-year-old son Noah.

Cryptic Messages and Moving Forward

Prior to the divorce news becoming public, Bunnie shared several cryptic messages to her social accounts. On June 15, she posted a TikTok in which she lip-synced to Nickleback’s song “How You Remind Me.” The same day, the Dumb Blonde podcast host shared a photo of herself to her Instagram Stories with a caption that read, “She’s getting her sparkle back,” suggesting a fresh start following the separation. As both parties navigate this public breakup, their fans grapple with the end of a relationship that many viewed as proof that love can triumph over even the most challenging circumstances.
