AirAsia Places Landmark $19 Billion Order for 150 Airbus A220 Jets

AirAsia’s $19 billion agreement to purchase 150 Airbus A220-300 jets marks the single largest aircraft order in Canadian history. The announcement took place at the Airbus facility in Mirabel, Quebec. AirAsia co-founder and CEO Tony Fernandes attended the ceremony in person. Industry leaders described the deal as a defining moment for both companies.

Fernandes called the A220 “the perfect tool for our next phase of growth.” He added that the order reflects the airline’s long-term discipline and scale of ambition. AirAsia operates as Southeast Asia’s dominant budget airline. This deal signals an ambitious shift beyond the airline’s traditional regional focus.

Airbus Commercial Aircraft CEO Lars Wagner welcomed the landmark agreement. He said the A220 planes will “open up new routes across Asia that were not feasible before.” Wagner also noted that reaction from airline customers to Airbus’s wider plans remains strongly positive. He said he sees significant demand across the region.

Flexible Order Structure Leaves Room for Expansion

The agreement carries strategic flexibility built directly into its structure. AirAsia holds the option to upsize its total commitment to 300 aircraft from the A220 family. That expansion would address future demand growth across the carrier’s network. The option to purchase additional aircraft does not carry the same deposit commitment as the firm order.

AirAsia also expressed a separate interest in a potential stretched version of the jet. In January, Airbus began offering a larger variant, known as the A220-500, to airlines and leasing firms. Fernandes said he believes Airbus will produce this version with around 180 seats. He added that this model could replace the A320 family entirely.

Wagner confirmed Airbus intends to decide on the larger variant this year. He said customer reaction has been positive across the board. “It obviously helps if we have a customer like Tony who publicly said he’s going to order another 150,” Wagner said. AirAsia would serve as the launch customer for the A220-500 if Airbus proceeds.

The order also makes AirAsia the global launch customer for a new cabin layout. This configuration seats 160 passengers aboard the A220. That figure exceeds the jet’s standard seating capacity. The new layout gives the airline a competitive edge on high-demand short and medium-haul routes.

New Fleet Shapes AirAsia’s Long-Haul Strategy

Airbus expects to deliver the new fleet beginning in 2028. The arrival of the new jets will reshape AirAsia’s wider aircraft strategy. Wagner explained that the smaller jets will free up larger aircraft. Those freed aircraft will focus on long-haul routes to North America, Australia, and Europe.

Fernandes described the A220’s range as a key strategic advantage. The aircraft unlocks new markets and routes across the region. He said this move brings AirAsia closer to becoming a true low-cost network carrier on a global scale. AirAsia currently operates as Southeast Asia’s dominant budget airline with a vast regional footprint.

The A220 originally came from Canadian planemaker Bombardier. It typically seats between 110 and 130 passengers in standard configurations. Airbus acquired the programme from Bombardier in 2018 at essentially no cost. The company has since worked to ramp up production and reach financial break-even on the programme.

Canadian Jobs and Manufacturing at the Centre of the Deal

The Mirabel facility, located north of Montreal, serves as Airbus’s primary production hub for the A220. A separate assembly line also operates in Mobile, Alabama. Airbus produces A220 planes for non-US customers exclusively in Mirabel. Canada stands as the only country outside Europe to host a major Airbus manufacturing programme.

A spokesperson at the ceremony highlighted the deal’s impact on Canadian workers. The 150 aircraft will involve thousands of engineers, electricians, steel welders, and IT specialists. These workers will build the aircraft on Canadian factory floors. The spokesperson described the roles as high-paying and technically exciting positions.

The Quebec provincial government holds a minority stake in the A220 programme. That government involvement underlines the strategic importance of the Mirabel site to the regional economy. The facility supports a wide network of local supply chain businesses. The deal adds pressure on Airbus to accelerate production growth at the site.

Belfast Operations Gain a Major Production Boost

The AirAsia deal delivers a significant boost to Airbus operations in Belfast. Workers at the Belfast plant manufacture the wings for every A220 aircraft and produce the mid-fuselage, or centre section, of the aircraft body. The Belfast Airbus operation employs around 1,500 people directly. It also supports additional jobs throughout the local supply chain.

Airbus bought the Belfast factory in 2025 as part of a wider deal. That deal led to the breakup of Spirit AeroSystems. Rival manufacturer Boeing also acquired some of Spirit’s Belfast assets. Boeing now employs the majority of the 3,500 staff working at the site.

Earlier this year, Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury committed significant cash investment to Belfast. He said the plant must demonstrate both quality and competitiveness. “It’s very important to be successful on the ramp-up, to be with a high level of quality, and to be competitive,” Faury said. He added that Airbus counts on Belfast employees and management to drive the programme forward.

Competitive Pressure Builds Around the A220 Programme

The AirAsia order pushes total A220 orders beyond 1,000 aircraft. That milestone strengthens Airbus’s position in the competitive narrow-body jet segment. However, the A220 programme faces real competition from Brazilian manufacturer Embraer. The Embraer E2 outsold the A220 by three-to-one last year.

Embraer also won a notable campaign against the A220 with Finnair in March. Those results highlight the ongoing commercial pressure Airbus faces in this market segment. Airbus now uses this record-breaking AirAsia order to build momentum. The deal reinforces the A220’s credentials as a viable and scalable platform for low-cost carriers worldwide.

The total value of the firm order stands at $19 billion at list price. The actual amount AirAsia will pay remains unclear, as airlines typically negotiate discounts. Deliveries begin in 2028, giving Airbus time to scale its production lines in Mirabel and Belfast. Both facilities now face growing demand to perform at a higher level than ever before.
