Alibaba Launches Zhenwu V900 Accelerator

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. rolled out what it calls China’s most powerful AI chip on Tuesday, marking a significant escalation in the country’s efforts to build domestic alternatives to U.S. semiconductor technology. The Zhenwu V900 accelerator, developed by Alibaba’s T-Head chip division, delivers three times the performance of its predecessor and can be deployed in clusters of up to 500,000 units to power frontier-model training, according to Chief Executive Officer Eddie Wu.

U.S.-listed shares of Alibaba rose more than 2% in overnight trading late Monday following the announcement, while shares climbed nearly 3% in Hong Kong trading Tuesday morning. The launch comes as global AI stocks rallied on early signs of success for Meta Platforms Inc.’s new personal agent, reviving investor optimism after recent market uncertainty.

The chip is expected to enter mass production in early 2027, positioning Alibaba to compete directly with Nvidia Corp., whose high-end AI accelerators have become the industry standard for training and running advanced models but face export controls in China. The combination of increasingly capable domestic hardware and expanding cloud infrastructure could allow Chinese companies to develop and deploy AI systems with less reliance on Nvidia, particularly as U.S. export restrictions limit Chinese access to the most advanced American chips.

Massive Infrastructure Expansion Planned

Alibaba’s chip announcement forms part of a sweeping push across AI models, chips, and data centers. Wu set a target of 20 gigawatts of data center capacity for its Alibaba Cloud service by 2032, based on expectations of “exponentially rising demand for AI.” The ecommerce company turned AI-aspirant has committed to spending more than $53 billion over a three-year period to expand its AI capabilities, making it among the biggest spenders on AI among leading Chinese players.

The company raised about $10.2 billion from a follow-on share offering in Hong Kong in August and plans to update its AI chip lineup annually. Alibaba has pledged to intensify its expenditure on AI hardware and infrastructure as Wu’s leadership team makes the pursuit of artificial general intelligence the company’s lodestar.

The company also plans to list the T-Head chip design unit to tap interest in the white-hot AI accelerator market, Bloomberg News has reported. Alibaba now plans to develop a model with between 5 and 10 trillion parameters, far larger than what’s common today, which would be designed to handle longer and more complex tasks.

Strategic Timing Ahead of US-China Summit

Alibaba’s event comes on the eve of a summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping this week, when the leaders will discuss a swathe of issues. AI matters are set to figure prominently, as top-level U.S. executives like Nvidia boss Jensen Huang and Microsoft Corp. Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella will attend a White House state dinner with the national leaders.

The CEO’s plans contrast with recent warnings from top AI labs in the U.S., after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei urged a slower pace of development to better handle AI risks. The announcement underscores the divergent approaches between Chinese and American tech leaders on the speed and scale of AI development.

Growing Competition for Nvidia in China

The launch adds another potential challenge for Nvidia, whose hardware dominance faces growing pressure from multiple Chinese competitors. NVDA stock was marginally higher in overnight trading late Monday despite the competitive threat. That combination of increasingly capable domestic hardware and expanding cloud infrastructure could allow Chinese companies to develop and deploy AI systems with less reliance on Nvidia, particularly as U.S. export restrictions limit Chinese access to the most advanced American chips.

Alibaba is far from alone in China’s AI chip push. Huawei is accelerating development of its next-generation Ascend 960 chips and is targeting commercial availability in the first quarter of 2027. The company is also developing large-scale computing systems that can connect up to 1 million processors to compensate for the performance limitations of individual chips.

Broader Chinese Semiconductor Ecosystem Emerges

Other Chinese chipmakers, including Cambricon, Enflame, Moore Threads, MetaX, and Iluvatar CoreX, are also developing alternatives to Nvidia. This expanding ecosystem of domestic chip developers reflects Beijing’s broader push to achieve semiconductor self-sufficiency in the face of U.S. technology restrictions.

The proliferation of Chinese AI chip startups and established players entering the market signals a strategic national priority to reduce dependence on foreign technology. These companies collectively represent a coordinated effort to build an entire supply chain for AI infrastructure, from chip design and manufacturing to cloud services and model training.

Alibaba’s simultaneous expansion across chips, infrastructure, and AI models demonstrates the integrated approach Chinese tech giants are taking to compete globally. By controlling multiple layers of the AI stack, from silicon to software, these companies aim to create self-sufficient ecosystems that can operate independently of Western technology providers.
