United Airlines Flight Diverted After Passenger Attempts Cockpit Breach

Emergency Landing Follows Security Threat

A United Airlines flight from Chicago to Minneapolis diverted to Madison, Wisconsin, on Friday night. An unruly passenger caused a major security concern on board. The airline confirmed the incident in an official statement.

Air traffic control audio reviewed by CNN captured crew members describing a passenger who had made “multiple attempts to try to breach the cockpit” before law enforcement officers on board restrained him. United flight 2005 departed from O’Hare International Airport at roughly 8 p.m. CDT. The flight landed at Dane County Regional Airport approximately 90 minutes after takeoff.

The Dane County Sheriff’s Office detained the passenger after the plane landed. Federal agents and law enforcement officers responded to the airport immediately. Officials have not disclosed the passenger’s identity. They also have not revealed whether any charges have been filed.

Off-Duty Officers Restrain Disruptive Passenger

Scanner audio from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office revealed additional details from the incident. Five off-duty law enforcement officers traveling on the plane detained the individual. The officers flanked the passenger on either side in his seat.

In the ATC audio reviewed by CNN, the crew told ground controllers at Dane County Regional Airport that traveling law enforcement officers gained control of the passenger. The crew confirmed the passenger was “seated in a seat” and “flanked” by law enforcement officers before outside law enforcement boarded the aircraft.

“I do not believe they ever cuffed him, but they were able to finally get control of him after multiple attempts to try to breach the cockpit,” a crew member says on air traffic control audio.

Authorities removed the unruly passenger from the flight at roughly 10:30 p.m. CDT. Sheriff’s office communications confirmed this timeline. The FBI Milwaukee’s Madison Resident Agency and local law enforcement partners responded immediately to the scene.

Passenger Witnesses Describe Tense Midair Scene

Mike Rundle, a passenger on board the flight, described a tense situation that unfolded midair. A fellow passenger saw the man at the front of the plane near the cockpit. The witness described how the man appeared to reach for a flight attendant.

“Saw the man at the front of the plane near the cockpit, in their words, kind of reach for a flight attendant, and subsequently had multiple guys hold him back,” Rundle said.

Rundle witnessed “a little bit of a commotion” a couple of rows ahead of him. Other passengers helped lead the man back to his seat. The plane then “made a U-turn and diverted to Madison,” he added.

After the flight diverted, police boarded the plane. Officers appeared to handcuff the man and walk him off the aircraft. Rundle observed the entire removal process from his seat.

FBI Confirms Federal Response to Incident

Caroline Clancy, an FBI spokesperson, confirmed the bureau’s involvement. The FBI received notification about the commercial flight diversion. Federal agents coordinated with local law enforcement partners throughout the response.

“FBI Milwaukee’s Madison Resident Agency and local law enforcement partners responded immediately. A subject was detained by the Dane County Sheriff’s Office and afterwards passengers resumed their flight,” Clancy said in a statement to CNN.

The Dane County Sheriff’s Office detained the subject. Passengers resumed their flight to Minneapolis after the security clearance. The airline has not provided additional details about potential delays or passenger accommodations.

United Airlines Addresses Security Concern

United Airlines issued a statement regarding the emergency landing. The flight “landed safely in Madison, Wisconsin to address a security concern with an unruly passenger,” the airline confirmed. United shared this statement with multiple news organizations.

The airline did not reveal the specific nature of the security concern in its official statement. Flight tracking data confirmed the aircraft’s diversion route. The plane changed course mid-flight after crew members assessed the threat level.

Aviation security protocols require immediate action when passengers attempt cockpit access. Cockpit breach attempts represent one of the most serious in-flight security threats. Airlines train crew members extensively to handle such emergencies.

Investigation Continues Into Cockpit Breach Attempt

Federal officials continue investigating the incident. The FBI, TSA, and local authorities coordinate their efforts. No charges have been publicly filed against the detained passenger yet.

CNN reached out to the Dane County Sheriff’s Office for additional information. Madison airport officials also received requests for comment. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities gather evidence.

The presence of five off-duty law enforcement officers on the flight proved crucial. Their quick response prevented the situation from escalating further. Aviation security experts note that such coincidences are rare but valuable.

Cockpit security measures have intensified significantly since 2001. Reinforced doors and strict access protocols protect flight crews. Passengers who attempt unauthorized cockpit access face severe federal penalties.

The incident highlights ongoing challenges in aviation security. Airlines must balance passenger comfort with strict safety protocols. Unruly passenger incidents have increased in recent years across the industry.
