Drivers warned after sunglasses set car on fire

Firefighters have warned against leaving objects in direct sunlight after a pair of sunglasses set a car on fire.

The sunglasses had been left on the dashboard and pictures show damage to the steering wheel and a hole in the windscreen.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said they attended the incident on Saturday – the warmest day of the year so far in the UK.

The village of Bramham in West Yorkshire saw the hottest temperature with a recording of 24.3C in the afternoon.

Steven Keates, the Met Office’s deputy chief forecaster said: “Next week is half term week for much of the country and there is as strong signal the high-pressure will continue to dominate our weather.

“Its exact position over the UK will dictate the temperature, wind direction and weather patterns, however, indications are that the dry, bright weather is likely to continue for most with little in the way of rain throughout next week.”
