Warriors Voice Extreme Pessimism About Kristaps Porziņģis Ever Playing for Golden State Again

The Golden State Warriors appear to operate as if Kristaps Porziņģis will never suit up for them again. His ongoing health issues have pushed the organization toward a very different plan for the 31-year-old big man.

According to ESPN’s Anthony Slater, people inside the Warriors organization have expressed an “extreme level of pessimism” about his return. At the same time, the team is exploring potential trades that could turn his contract into an asset.

“Team sources continue to express an extreme level of pessimism that Porzingis will ever play for the Warriors again, but he could end up helping the organization in another way, because his contract, which is only guaranteed for $3 million next season, could still prove to be valuable in executing a trade,” Slater reported.

The situation remains in limbo, and the Warriors have not set a timeline for resolving it. The team opens its season with a 1-3 record, which adds urgency to every roster decision.

A Health Matter With No Clear Timeline

The Warriors announced on Oct. 14 that Porziņģis would remain out indefinitely because of a “health-related matter.” The announcement followed a meeting with general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. and vice president of player health and performance Dr. Rick Celebrini.

Porziņģis addressed the issue on social media the same day. He wrote that he was still working with doctors and medical experts to “figure out how to be fully back to good health ASAP” and that he was “getting better and better.”

His statement offered no indication of a potential return to basketball. That silence has fueled the pessimism now surfacing from team sources.

Trade Exploration Begins

One week after the announcement, on Oct. 21, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Warriors had “started exploring trade routes” for Porziņģis. Charania also reported that the big man was “seriously contemplating his future in basketball” because of his health.

That report marked a notable shift in the story. A health absence that the team first described as a matter to monitor had become a question about whether he would play again at all.

Slater’s latest reporting builds on that foundation. The pessimism he describes does not suggest the Warriors have given up on helping Porziņģis. Instead, it shows the organization looking for a way to protect its own interests while he focuses on recovery.

Why the Contract Still Carries Value

Porziņģis signed a two-year, $40 million deal with the Warriors during the offseason. He earns $20 million this season and holds a $20 million player option for 2027-28.

The structure of that option year is what makes the contract so interesting to potential trade partners. The deal guarantees only $3 million of the option year until July 7, 2027. A team acquiring him would carry limited long-term financial risk, and that flexibility could make him a useful piece in a larger deal.

Slater also noted another possible path for the Warriors. The team could point to Porziņģis’ “unwillingness to be present” at its facilities as “a failure to render his services” and use that argument to potentially void his contract.

That option appears more aggressive than a trade, and Slater framed it only as a possibility. It does show the range of scenarios the organization is weighing as it plans around a player who may not return.

From Trade Deadline Pickup to Uncertain Future

Golden State acquired Porziņģis in a trade with the Atlanta Hawks before the in-season deadline last February. He appeared in 15 games for the Warriors, averaging 16.1 points and 5.3 rebounds.

Those numbers gave the Warriors a glimpse of the production they hoped to build around. The new contract suggested they expected him to remain a core piece for at least two seasons.

Instead, his health has overtaken the basketball conversation. The Warriors now face a choice between waiting for clarity and moving his contract while it still holds trade value.

What Comes Next for the Warriors

For now, the next developments depend on two factors: Porziņģis’ health and the market for a player with his contract structure. The Warriors have not announced a trade, and Porziņģis has not announced any decision about his future in basketball.

Team sources continue to describe a pessimistic outlook, yet they also see a way for Porziņģis to help the organization without playing a game. His partially guaranteed option year gives Golden State a tool that few teams in his situation would have.

The coming weeks will show whether another team views that flexibility as worth a deal. Until then, the Warriors will keep exploring their options while Porziņģis continues working with doctors and medical experts on his recovery.
