Elon Musk Vows to Create AI Version of The Odyssey After Attacking Nolan’s Blockbuster

Musk Announces AI-Generated Film Project

The tech mogul and recently-crowned trillionaire wrote on his social media platform X that his AI system Grok Imagine would produce a full-length feature version of Homer’s ancient Greek poem. He promised the AI-generated film would be “historically accurate and true to the art of Homer.” Elon Musk announced the project would be complete before the end of 2026, positioning it perfectly for awards season consideration.

“Before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer,” he posted, alongside an AI-generated three-minute short created by an X user.

The announcement extends Musk’s months-long criticism of Christopher Nolan’s theatrical adaptation. Homer’s nearly 2,800-year-old epic features cyclops, six-headed monsters, and a witch who transforms sailors into pigs. Critics question how “historically accurate” any retelling-AI-generated or otherwise-can truly be when the source material is widely considered a work of fiction.

Racial and Casting Controversies Fuel Campaign

The tech billionaire emerged as a leading critic when rumors circulated about Lupita Nyong’o’s casting as Helen of Troy. In March, Musk launched a particularly inflammatory attack against the acclaimed director. He claimed Nolan only cast the Oscar-winning actress because “He wants the awards,” calling the filmmaker “an anti-White racist.” The all-white AI cast featured in the short film he shared on X appears to align with his preferred vision for the production.

The Tesla and SpaceX founder also targeted trans actor Elliot Page when initial rumors suggested he might portray Achilles. Musk reacted forcefully to those reports, supporting transphobic posts about the actor. He called the rumored casting “one of the dumbest and most twisted things I’ve ever heard,” despite Page ultimately playing Sinon, a Greek soldier incorporated from Virgil’s epic poem The Aeneid, not Achilles.

Amplifying Controversial Voices

In May, Musk endorsed racist commentary from far-right journalist Matt Walsh of the Daily Wire. Walsh had criticized Nyong’o’s involvement in inflammatory terms, comparing it to hypothetical casting of a white actress in an African-set film. He suggested such a scenario would provoke “murderous violence” and rioting.

“Absolutely true. Such hypocrisy in Hollywood,” Musk commented on Walsh’s post.

The billionaire also expressed support for an alternative project. He wrote he was “down” to provide Mel Gibson with $100 million to film an Odyssey adaptation “delivered in Homeric Greek,” responding to an X user’s suggestion. The comment added another layer to his ongoing public opposition to Nolan’s vision for the legendary tale.

Nolan’s Epic Achieves Box Office Triumph

Universal Pictures’ film has achieved triumphant success despite Musk’s sustained criticism. The movie appears destined to become Nolan’s highest-grossing film to date. Industry projections suggest it will continue its impressive box office performance throughout the coming weeks, defying the tech mogul’s negative commentary.

The film earned approximately $264 million in its worldwide opening weekend. Recent global counts placed the total take at $263.7 million, with projections of an additional $20 million for a single Tuesday alone. The two-time Oscar-winning director’s adaptation has received almost universally stellar reviews from critics and audiences alike, positioning it as a strong contender for major awards recognition.

Star-Studded Cast Delivers Acclaimed Performances

The Odyssey features an ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, and Robert Pattinson. The production also stars Jon Bernthal, Charlize Theron, Samantha Morton, and John Leguizamo alongside the controversial casting choices Musk targeted. The film retells Homer’s epic poem, which historians believe was written sometime in the 7th or 8th Century BC.

Nolan shot the entire production on Imax film with minimal use of CGI. This technical approach stands in stark contrast to the AI-generated imagery Musk proposes for his competing version. Industry observers suggest the practical filmmaking techniques will likely make Nolan’s achievement appear even more impressive when compared to any AI-generated alternative.

Questions Surround AI Film Viability

The feasibility of Musk’s announced project remains uncertain. Grok Imagine’s current capabilities produce only short video clips, raising doubts about creating a feature-length film within the proposed timeline. The three-minute sample he shared on X demonstrates the technology’s present limitations, showing inconsistent visual quality and narrative coherence issues common to AI-generated video content.

Wide acknowledgement from actual historians confirms Homer’s work is a piece of fiction set in a mythological past. The businessman’s emphasis on “historical accuracy” appears focused on the racial element rather than fidelity to the poem’s fantastical narrative events. Critics note the irony of promising accuracy for a story featuring divine interventions, magical creatures, and impossible journeys that defy both historical record and physical possibility.

The South African businessman has a history of making controversial statements about his own family. He has made transphobic attacks against his trans daughter Vivian Jenna Wilson from his first marriage, who has cut ties with him. His commentary on The Odyssey casting extends this pattern of inflammatory public statements on social and cultural issues.
